The nonprofit TULSA ROOTS MUSIC presents an eclectic array of music—alt-country, folk, Cajun, zydeco, rock, reggae, blues, bluegrass, and world music—through live performances and educational programming. The organization promotes two celebrated annual events: Tulsa Roots Music’s GLOBAL BASH, a world music festival, and TULSA ROOTS ROCKS the GREEN, an eclectic five-week series. In 2018 we will be adding the TULSA INTERNATIONAL WINE & JAZZ FETE, a free festival featuring top-shelf wines and world-class jazz. All are free outdoor events at Tulsa’s state-of-the-art Guthrie Green arts park and feature internationally touring artists, local acts, a kids’ arts tent, community booths, local food and OK craft brews. Tulsa Roots Music also presents touring artists on an ongoing basis at a variety of Tulsa venues, and collaborates with Tulsa’s Gilcrease Museum on its MUSIC ON EXHIBIT program, a series in which concerts by internationally touring musicians complement visual art displays.
JULIE WENGER WATSON (co-director) was raised in Tulsa. She booked and promoted the popular All Soul Acoustic Coffeehouse for several years, which brought nationally touring musicians to Tulsa. Watson has also worked with The Tulsa Children’s Museum, Tulsa Mayfest and The National Fiddler Hall of Fame to present a variety of musical events. Watson is a staff writer for Currentland and a regular contributor to Tulsa Kids. She is a featured contributor to No Depression.
MICHAEL KOSTER (co-director) founded and ran the Thirsty Ear Festival, New Mexico’s premier roots music event, for 13 years. He also founded the Santa Fe Blues fest and continues to work in both Santa Fe and Tulsa in all aspects of music promotion. He has worked with hundreds of internationally touring artists and dozens of venues over the years. He regularly writes performing arts grants, and has written many articles on arts & culture for the likes of Stereophile, ARTnews, Art & Antiques, Magnet, AP, Mountain Living, and many others.
